At what speed do you listen to an article?

It’s the setting that almost everyone adjusts just once, at the beginning, and then forgets.

The scale ranges from half speed to double speed, and each segment has its purpose. Below one, you go down for two reasons: a language you are learning, or a text dense with numbers and proper names, where missing a word means missing the sentence. Around one are the in-depth pieces and interviews, everything you want to follow properly: it’s the pace at which the voice breathes where a person would breathe.

A little higher, towards one and a half, is the news roundup: the pieces where you already know the topic and you just need the update. At double speed, let’s be honest, you’re not listening: you’re checking if it’s worth listening to. Legitimate use, but it’s a different use.

Hence the less obvious advice: the right speed depends on the text, not on you. "I’m someone who prefers one and a half" means nothing. The same ear that devours a fast-paced report gets lost, at the same pace, on an economics piece full of percentages. The button is pressed throughout the day, not just once: with each press, it goes up a notch, and after the maximum, it starts again from the minimum.

Then keep tapping — after the maximum, you return to the minimum — and listen to it slowly again. Same text, two different texts.

The signal that you are going too fast is not the feeling of fatigue: it’s the fact that you rewind. If within an article you go back more than once or twice, your attention hasn’t dropped: the speed is wrong. Go down a notch and the rewinding stops on its own.

Context also matters: the pace you can maintain drops when you are tired and when you are doing something else, and what works at the desk becomes too much in traffic. Beyond a certain threshold, the voice can still be understood but tires the listener: understanding and following without effort are two different limits, and it’s better to adjust to the second.

A limit, before it becomes a habit: when speeding up, synthetic voices do not behave the same way in all languages — the pace that remains clear in Italian can muddle consonants elsewhere. And on certain texts, those dense with acronyms and decimals like this one, one and a quarter is already too much.
